Last Thursday, The Winchester Bakery hosted a community sewing day on behalf of St John’s Winchester as part of a wider community project, The Fabric of Winchester.

Welcoming members of Winchester’s community to The Winchester Bakery’s first floor, those who joined spent time crafting patches based on personal memories of Winchester. There are a total of 5 community sewing days taking place and once these are complete, all the donated blocks will be stitched together into quilts which showcase the memories that make Winchester extraordinary.

The quilts will be stitched together by members of the Wessex Quiltmakers, local quiltmakers, and Winchester textiles students. The finished quilts will be on display for the public to enjoy The Arc, Winchester from 12th – 14th January 2024, before they are donated to Winchester Hospice early next year, in support of the impactful work of the charity providing palliative and end of life care.

It was a lovely creative session upstairs at The Winchester Bakery, complete with pastries and hot drinks. If you would like to get involved, there is still time to do so!

The next community sewing days are as follows:

Alternatively, you can create your block at home or select a piece of fabric which holds special meaning and donate it to be included in the quilts by Friday 10th November 2023.

It is our pleasure to be a sponsor of this project, and you can find out more here.
